OUR FAVOURITE EVERYDAY OATMEAL

A no-fuss oatmeal recipe for cozy breakfasts (or dinners!), made with just a few basic ingredients.

Hello, friends and readers! It’s Rita here, spoon in hand and ready to tell you all about a simple, popular meal in our home.
If we had to sort our mornings into categories, they’d fall into these three: smoothies, pancakes, and oatmeal. And truth be told, oatmeal wins by a landslide. Such a landslide, in fact, that it sometimes finds its way into our dinner menu. Yep, we happily eat oatmeal in the morning and in the evening!
Since Simão started on solid foods, this has been one of our most frequently made meals. We've prepared countless versions: with grated fruit, blended fruit, fresh or frozen berries, a whole range of spices, and all kinds of seeds… But today we’re sharing the simplest, most stripped-back and faithful version of our routine: our go-to oatmeal.
No grated fruit, no fancy ingredients. Just a few minutes on the stove and a handful of pantry staples we always have on hand. This recipe lives in my mind absolutely rent-free—I make it on autopilot, not thoughts going through my head as I put everything together.
And since we’re talking oats, let me show you the three types of oat flakes we always keep in our pantry. We choose depending on how much time we have and how hungry we are:
- Old Fashioned Rolled Oats: take 8 to 10 minutes to cook. They’re denser and make a really satisfying porridge.
- Quick Oats: ready in about 5 minutes. They make a creamier porridge, though with a bit of bite left.
- Instant Oats: done in 2 minutes. The creamiest of the three, but also the lightest — less fibre, less body, less staying power.
Of course we love fancier oatmeal — if you haven’t tried our Energy Boosting Cacao Oatmeal, go take a peek! — but this version… This is our comfort zone. Our little ritual. Our mantra. I hope it brings you just as much comfort as it brings us!

OATMEAL
- 50 g oats (instant, quick or old fashioned, depending on your preferred texture)
- 250 ml plant-based milk
- 1 piece of lemon peel
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- ¼ tsp cinnamon powder
TOPPINGS (OUR FAVOURITES)
- A few spoonfuls of natural, soya yoghurt
- A drizzle of date syrup
- A handful of fresh berries
- Chopped pecan nuts
- A sprinkle of chia seeds
Start by gathering, preparing and measuring all of the ingredients. This will improve your dynamic in the kitchen.
- Add all the oatmeal ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently until it begins to simmer. Cook over medium-high heat for 2–4 minutes for instant oats, 4–6 minutes for quick oats, or 8–10 minutes for old fashioned rolled oats. Stir frequently until you reach your desired consistency.
- Transfer to a bowl, add your favourite toppings, and serve warm.
